Angel Tree gets ready to deliver!

Giant City has been the wonderful recipient of generous donations. This Christmas Season several teachers, staff, parents, students, churches, and our local Brownie troop donated funds or gifts to make some holiday wishes come true for children in our area. This week the presents will be delivered. 

Cheer Competitors Ready!

Hiant City Cheerleaders will compete in their first regional competition today. Girls have been practicing since July and hope to qualify for state competition in February. Good Luck Giants!

Special Visitors in Mrs. Crombar's Class

This week Mrs. Crombar and her students received a special set of visitors. An able veteran and his canine companion stopped by to show the class some tricks and discuss working dogs. The visit correlated with a story from the 3/4 reading time. The class raised $100 to donate to the project which relies on donations.

Wild West Day at Giant City!

On Friday, November 1, 2013 students in kindergarten through 4th grades enjoyed a Wild West PRIDE Party. Those students exhibiting good behavior for the first quarter were able to participate in the following activities:
1) Horseback ride
2) Cook s'mores
3) A shaving station
4) A hay wagon ride
5) Run a stick horse obstacle course
6) Practice roping a hay bale calf
7) Paint some western ornaments
This event could not have been possible without our great parent volunteers and donations!

Owl Pellet Dissection

Today fifth grade students dissected owl pellets in science. Students tried to determine what kind of prey the owl had last feasted on.

Fort Massac Encampment

Students in 5-8th grades went on a field trip today to the Fort Massac Encampment at Metropolis. Students were able to experience demonstrations in period life from the French and Indian War.

Regional Baseball Champions!

Giant City boys baseball clinched the Regional Championship this evening. The Giants played OLMC for the title. The Giants demonstrated excellent fielding, and pitching, as well as hitting. Congrats to 8th grader Seth German for a three run home run!

Blood drive today

Giant City School hosted a blood drive in the gym today from 2-6 pm. Staff, parents, and community members rolled up their sleeves to give!

Parent Volunteer Work Day

On Saturday, several parents and staff members helped clean up the school grounds. Volunteers did weed-eating, painting, caulking, and trimmed limbs to make the school grounds safer.

Students in Ms. Taylor's room were rewarded with pizza today. These students read at least 800 pages over the summer and turned in a report of their reading to Ms. Taylor. Ms. Taylor paid for their delicious lunch !

How does our garden grow?

Earlier this summer Giant City planted the raised garden beds. We wanted students to be able to harvest a few things this fall. Pumpkins, gourds, tomatoes, and green peppers were started. All of the rain has really kicked the plants into high gear!

Booster Club gives out Escue Award

On July 15, 2013 Booster Club President Ed Robinson presented Brian Kelley with the Escue Athletic Academic Achievement Award. The presentation was made at the regular Board of Education Meeting. 
President Robinson stated that after consideration the Booster Club felt that one student deserving of the award was missed; and the Boosters wanted to honor that student. 
Brian Kelley played multiple sports all four years at Giant City, was a salutatorian, and participated in numerous clubs. Please congratulate Brian if you see him!

Muddy Kids Check Presentation

This year Giant City School was the pilot program for the Muddy Kids Project. The Muddy Kids Foundation works to promote student understanding of the wildlife living in southern Illinois. This year students learned different species of animals and took a field trip to the Touch of Nature to explore and meet many of the animal species. Muddy Kids founder, Gene Morgan is pictured with teachers and students from Giant City. He is presenting a check for $500 to the school to purchase supplies for the program, and another $500 was donated to pay for the field trip to Touch of Nature.

Cache Creek Donation

This week has been a very busy one at Giant City! Olivia and Emma hosted a bake sale to add to the donation for Cache Creek Animal Shelter. Overall they raised over $1200 to donate to the animal shelter. It is amazing how much anyone can contribute to the world today!

PRIDE Parties

Students displaying good behavior of 9 points or less got to attend the PRIDE Party! Younger students enjoyed activities such as inflatables, slip-n-slide, hula hoops, races, and much more. Older students went to the Rec Center at SIU to play basketball, racquetball, swimming, and diving. Thanks to all of those people and businesses that donated funds for these special days!

Track State Qualifiers

Congratulations to Rachel Robinson (800 m), and Jasmine Deboe, Elissa Escue, Haley Barrett and Rachel Robinson (400 girl relay) for qualifying for the State Track Meet in Salem, IL. The meet is set for May 11, 2012.

CCHS Engineering Day!

Students from Giant City attended the Engineering Day hosted by CCHS honor students on Saturday. Teacher Chris White took five students to the competition. Competitors built catapults and a puff mobile to compete. Billy Brandenburg and Elizabeth Schultz took home 5th and 7th places in overall competition respectively! Nice Job!

Congratulations to History Fair Students!

Art Program Collaboration

Students from the SIU School of Art and Design have provided art for students in 1st and 2 nd grade over the last few weeks. Students come once a week to do special projects.
