Thanksgiving Food Drive

Turkey Trot 5K

Giant City School hosted the Turkey Trot 5K today! Almost 90 participants showed up to run, walk and win prizes! Mrs. Honza and Mrs. Hill were very thankful for the support of our families and community.

Lunch with Lt. Governor

Mrs. Hill was lucky to get to enjoy lunch with Lt. Governor Sheila Simon today. Mrs. Hill and Board Member, Kate Fakhoury shared many of the positive experiences happening at Giant City School. The three also discussed the implications of SB16 on Giant City's future funding.

The effects of Monster

Today junior high students in Mr. Murley's science made predictions concerning a chemical reaction! Students observed the effect of Monster Drink on a regular glass of milk. As you can see from the pictures the Monster drink completely curdles the milk. YUCK!

Giant City School Yard Sale!


Giant City School will be hosting a yard sale of unique and antique items on August 8, 2014. The sale will run from 7am- 12 pm. NO EARLY SALES!
Items include:
Wooden display bookshelf, 4ft wire rack shelf,
A child's computer desk, old Polaroid camera(in original box ).
Furniture including: teacher desks, student chairs, sets of lockers, several heavy duty round tables. 
Large items include: (not running) Simplicity Zero Turn Lawn Mower, (not working) ice machine, fax machine, dehumidifiers, two
Steel doors with frames...
Many more items. 
Located in the Giant City School parking lot. Booth space is also available to rent for $10. FRIDAY ONLY!

BETA Club Quiz Bowl-8th in the Nation

Giant City BETA Club Quiz Bowl members traveled to Virginia this week to compete at the National Beta Club Convention. The team made it through four rounds of tough competition to come out 8th in the Nation. Congratulations!

K-4 PRIDE Party

Students in kindergarten through 4th grade enjoyed field day activities today. Parents and teachers provided several stations such as obstacle course, slip-n-slide, petting zoo, and Jump Rope

8th Grade Trip

8th grade Students left early this morning on their end of year trip. Their first stop was at the Mega Caverns in Louisville, KY. Student will travel to Cinncinate OH later today for more exciting experiences!

CPR training

Giant City students in 5-8 th grades received instruction on how to perform CPR in PE. Students have the opportunity to earn their CPR card on adults/children /infants by passing a test today.

Internet Safety Presentation

Trooper Joey Watson of the Illinois State Police gave safety presentations to students at Giant City today. The trooper presented information about identify theft, social media, and internet safety in general.

Illinois State Science Fair Awards

Giant City is proud to announce that three of our junior high students won gold at the ISSF. Ian Kinsel conducted an experiment about which types of filters remove the most dye. Valerie Graham and Sawyer Latour conducted an experiment concerning the new types of sweeteners available and their effect on micro-organisms. Valerie and Sawyer received a $200 award from the Illinois Water Environmental Association. Congratulations!

Legislative Updates

Today Mrs. Hill had the opportunity to meet with representatives from the state of Illinois concerning educational funding. This morning Mrs Hill attended a question and answer session with Senator David Luechtefeld. This afternoon she attended a meeting with Senator Andy Manar and Lt. Governor Sheila Simon. Both of these sessions were designed to help educators understand the legislature's process in developing a change in school funding.

This week students at Giant City learned about rhythm and dance.  Mrs. Honza helped students understand the rhythm and beat of dancing through fun activities.

Illinois Principal Association Recognition

Giant City School celebrated two
of it's outstanding students this evening. Hasan Majid and Sawyer Latour were chosen on the basis of citizenship and academics. Both attended a dinner in their honor with other students and principals throughout the region at Southern Illinois University.

Star Lab

K-4 Students at Giant City were able to enjoy Star Lab today. This interactive experience allows students to learn about planets and constellations. 

Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library& Museum Field Trip

5-8 grade students went on a field trip to Springfield today. The field trip was paid for by a grant from the Winnick Foindation. The grant covered transportation and entry into the ALPLM museum.  Students also visited the Illinois State Field Museum.

The Giant City boys basketball team are the new Class S State Champions! The boys defeated New Hope scoring a total of 73 points!

Amazing Race!

Junior High students at Giant City participated in the Amazing Race. Teams of six students completed tasks such as an egg drop, cracking codes, played a tune, and shots targets with marshmallows. Most of the students really seemed to enjoy the activities. The winning team received gift cards!
